An Interview by Chuck Samuels
For Chuck Samuels’s third self-interview published in Ciel variable, the photographer and his alter ego (or, perhaps, the author and his alter ego) discuss “variations on the similar themes” that run through his practice. A publication and an exhibition are the reason for this exchange that is zany yet sensible, driven and underpinned by a reflection on the image and its reproducible nature. “It occurred to me,” says Samuels (the artist), “that a publication that dealt exclusively with my solo projects in which I photographed myself in order to confront assorted characteristics of photography ... could be very interesting.” Having tried to “become” photography, he admits that he wants to continue his work on photographic quotation. “It’s like a scab,” he was told about his creative obsession, “you have to pick at it, pick at it, pick at it!”
