— Mona Hakim
It’s no surprise, admits Mona Hakim, that the tree, an emblematic figure for Jocelyn Philibert, takes centre stage in this major monograph. Yet, Hakim notes, sculpture, an early practice of Philibert’s, has not been forgotten. As proof, she cites the observations of three authors, as well as the pictures of sculptures that open and close the “image-rich” book. The choices by the graphic designers highlight, on double pages or full pages, the quest for blinding light that Philibert has pursued in photographing trees for thirty years. “It is this magnetism, this spirit of exaltation, that the book seeks to re-create, at the very least,” Hakim writes. “We willingly wander through these pages as we wander, moved, in the darkness of the forest.”
