Originally created as a showcase for local press photography, in 2019 the Zoom Festival celebrated its tenth anniversary of exhibiting both Canadian and foreign photojournalism. In Sophie Bertrand’s view, the programming for this edition was also marked by “documentary photography and different narrative lines in addition to classic press photography.” Although the themes addressed by the vast selection (climate change, human rights, Indigenous and migratory issues) were hardly surprising, Bertrand emphasizes the wealth of projects by women and the emphasis on Canadian issues. “Aside from the sometimes uneven quality of the work shown,” she writes,“the festival tends to closely follow transformations in the photojournalism trade and bring all of its forms into view.” She also believes that the Zoom Festival is now trying to distance itself from the model it has followed, VISA pour l’image in Perpignan, France.
