Biennale des Photographes du Monde Arabe Contemporain
Regards sur le Liban, l’Égypte et le Maroc | Eyes upon Lebanon, Egypt, and Morocco

By Claudia Polledri

Despite the apparent homogeneity of the label “Arab world” in its title, the Paris-based biennale had a broad reach, embracing both engaged images reflecting social issues and images that express aesthetic research. At least, this was what the third edition of the event was conveying, in Claudia Polledri’s view. “To this variety of approaches was added the reference to a region that is vast, complex, and far from homogeneous,” she writes. “It was thus by focusing on the photographs, measuring their connection with reality and the angle chosen to represent it, that spectators could unearth the intricacies of the cultural and geographic space brought to bear.” Polledri analyzes bodies of work drawn from a Lebanon caught between reality and fiction, an Egypt overflowing with narratives, and a pop Morocco. She concludes by calling upon the biennale to continue pursuing “this courageous and necessary mission” that highlights works rarely presented in international events.
