During his visit to the 12th Berlin Biennale, Nicolas Mavrikakis spent time at the section housed in a building dubbed “Campus for Democracy.” “The idea is aptly striking,” he writes regarding the choice to talk about surveillance at that location –the former Stasi headquarters. The works of three artists caught his attention, including a “major” video installation by Omer Fast. “Three smartphones, used here as viewing screens but also evoking the possibility of secret surveillance, even of children,” Mavrikakis writes, “confronted us with a duality inherent to many technologies, old and new, as both instruments allowing a better grasp of reality and potential tools for control.” He observes that “even in democracies,” the exercise of power and the control of individuals go hand in hand.
