Integrating biographical tidbits and her impressions of the artist, Judith Joy Ross, Michèle Cohen Hadria comments on series of portraits produced over four decades by Ross, to whom Le BAL, in Paris, devoted a retrospective. During Cohen Hadria’s visit to the exhibition, she noted Ross’s high level of engagement, evidenced in her respect for her models and a tendency to favour “what we call the local.” Writing about Ross’s photographs of anti-war protesters – “ordinary people” – Cohen Hadria observes that Ross “brought out their rather majestic courage.” Nevertheless, Ross never looks away from “the country’s political contradictions, which she analyzes with remarkable lucidity.”
