Emmanuel Galland, « Mes Dates / Close Friends »
HANGAR 7826, Montreal
From November 6 to November 28 2021
— Sophie Bertrand
Emmanuel Galland’s screen captures that paper the walls of the small, new gallery HANGAR 7826 combined a series of “names without faces.” This “dynamically and spontaneously arranged” hanging, “as if [the captures] were pinned on a bulletin board,” as Sophie Bertrand describes it, went beyond typological classification. Both floors of the venue had to be discovered to realize this. In Bertrand’s view, this “visual repertoire” of gay pornographic films fits within Galland’s multifaceted practice. She cites his previous projects to show how his use of accumulation, in particular, enables him to “explore the quest for identity, whether personal, territorial, or societal.” The project resonates even more strongly in the context of the pandemic, she concludes, given our bulimic Internet consumption, but also the use of screens “to fill the social distance” that COVID-19 has imposed.
