Summary

The thematic feature of this issue, entitled Tableaux, brings together works by Donigan Cumming, Jeff Wall, and Luc Delahaye, who explore contemporary social issues through the lens of the photographic tableau. Whether through scenes captured within the confined space of a parking booth in Cumming’s work, Wall’s rigorous and carefully constructed compositions, or Delahaye’s very large-format images, their practices highlight the relationships between staging, framing, and narrative in contemporary photography.

The issue also includes three essays. The first offers a cross-reading of La femme 100 têtes by Angela Grauerholz. The second revisits photographs taken by Michel Huneault in Japan in the years following the 2011 tsunami. Finally, a third text focuses on the exhibition Dommage! by le commun des mortels, which brings together a selection of anonymous family photographs.

In an interview, Marie J. Jean discusses issues related to the conception of the book 1985. Image-Worlds, published on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of VOX in Montreal.

The issue also features a selection of recent exhibitions in Quebec, across Canada, and internationally, as well as reviews of a documentary film and three books dedicated on photography.
